Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I assumed the Movie Guy 24/7 identity in December 2010 when I started my website. However, I’ve been a lover of movies as long as I can remember. As a child, I had unusual tastes, much different from my peers. In fourth grade, when all my classmates could talk about was Star Wars, I wanted to see Saturday Night Fever. At 12, I begged to see All that Jazz and The Rose. Sadly, I couldn’t convince the parentals to overturn their unfair ban on R-rated movies. I did get to see Kramer vs. Kramer, a small victory. Anyway, this should give you some idea of my mindset.

I LOVE all kinds of movies, from the masterpieces of Bergman (Cries and Whispers is a beautiful film) to crappy B-movies (The One-Armed Executioner is cool!). I’m particularly fond of titles from New World Pictures (e.g. Death Race 2000, C.H.U.D.) and Cannon Films (e.g. The Apple, Death Wish 3). I also dig the following subgenres: mad slasher/dead teenager movies, spaghetti westerns, kung fu flicks, teen T&A comedies, grindhouse/drive-in movies, blaxploitation and vigilante/revenge flicks.

As for current films, let me say that I don’t like found footage movies, PG-13 horror flicks, SAVs (Sensory Assault Vehicles, e.g. any Transformers movie) or most comedies (Judd Apatow is WAY overrated). For me, today’s movies don’t have the same purity in form and intent than their predecessors. Still, I enjoy going to the movies. It’s been the one constant in my life. No matter what’s going on, no matter what I might be going through, cinema has been there for me. It’s an escape and a comforting force.

For years, people told me I should be a critic, but I guess I was afraid to make a commitment to one profession until a few years ago. Let’s just say that something happened in my life that made me finally decide to do something I love as opposed to something to earn a living.

I first discovered film criticism by watching Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel on Sneak Previews, a weekly program that aired on PBS in the late 70s/early 80s. I may not have always agreed with them, but I loved those guys. Now I get to do what they did. Life is good.

Thanks for taking the time to read all this. Now go explore my page. I hope you like it.
