It’s part of her wealthy new family’s involvement in a satanic cult. They have to kill her by dawn or face retribution from their master. When the sun rises and the bride is still breathing, the whole family explodes one by one in a huge blast of blood. Talk about a blood-spattered bride!

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream 5 & 6) double down on the splash and splatter in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come serving up a bloody good time while literally taking the game to the next level. It picks up exactly where the first one left off with bloodied and battered bride Grace (Weaving, Babylon) emerging from the burning La Domas mansion and smoking a cigarette while first responders arrive on the scene. She passes out and is taken to the hospital where she wakes up handcuffed to the bed. She’s a suspect in the killings of her in-laws mainly because the police can’t figure out what actually happened. Not that they’d believe the truth anyway. No rational person would.

Grace’s estranged younger sister Faith (Newton, Abigail) shows up at the hospital. She’s the emergency contact. It’s not exactly a joyous reunion. There’s a lot of baggage to unpack on both sides. That will all have to wait. It turns out the game isn’t over, not by a long shot. By surviving the first round, Grace triggered a clause in the game’s bylaws that mandates the winner take part in a new contest of survival. In a nutshell, she’s to be hunted by a different bunch of rich whack jobs at a different mansion. She has to play. There is no opting out. Also, Faith has to play too.

So who’s gunning for Grace this time? They’re called the High Council, an elite secret collective consisting of the wealthiest families in the world. A guy named Chester Danforth (body horror director Cronenberg) sits at the head of the table. He’s an all-powerful sort who calls all the shots in world affairs. Grace’s victory is a monkey wrench in the machine. It means the leadership of the Council is up for grabs. The families are called together to compete for it. Whoever wins takes the throne.

Like all games, there are rules, all laid out by a quietly creepy lawyer (Wood, Sin City). Competitors cannot kill each other. If this rule is violated, the whole family pays dearly. There’s a line of succession in the event a competitor is killed. Refusal to participate in the hunt results in loss of wealth and position. Everything is signed in blood.

The players are Danforth’s psycho children, twin siblings Ursula (Gellar, I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Titus (Hatosy, The Pitt), gun crazy Ignacio El Caido (Carbonell, The Morning Show), sword-wielding Wan Cheng Xing (Cheng, Marco Polo) and hard-partying brothers Madhu (Saranga, Wynonna Earp) and Viraj (Khitab, Robyn Hood). There’s a wild card in the form of Francesca (Jae, Gen V), the furious ex-fiancee of Grace’s late husband. Clad in her bridal gown and sporting a rocket launcher, she wants revenge against Grace for stealing her man. What is it they say about a woman scorned?

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is one of those rare cases where the sequel is better than the first movie. I like the original well enough, but this new one goes the extra mile. Instead of merely regurgitating the plot of its predecessor, it builds on it. To wit, it creates a universe much in the same way as the John Wick series. The first RoN serves as an intro while RoN2 pulls us right into it. Being there in the thick of things, you can’t help but consider what lies just beneath the surface. Yes, it’s our old friend Mr. Metaphor. And what might that metaphor be? Simple, the rules of civilized society don’t apply to the upper 1%. It’s a real world truth taken to exaggerated lengths. That, my friends, is what we call pointed satire.

The two leading ladies do a fine job. Weaving makes for a likable heroine while Newton capably keeps up with her. Not only that, their rapport as they fight their way through the deadly gauntlet is believable. They sound like two sisters who really need to work a few things out. Hatosy is suitably unsettling as a violent psycho and Gellar does nicely as the more calculating sibling. Jae camps it up to 11 as the cray-cray ex. But you know, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come isn’t about great acting. It’s about actors taking their roles and running with them. The whole cast looks like they’re having fun. Isn’t that what’s really important?

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is wild and insane. It has plenty of blood and violence. It’s thrilling, funny and smart. My only complaint is this one scene that goes on longer than it needs to. It’s when one of the heroines is being brutally assaulted by Titus. Yeah, it’s a bit much even for me. Aside from that minor glitch, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is great fun. I truly hope there’s a third one.
