It’s the only way to see the new concert film Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D). It’s what makes a three-star movie a four-star one.

I should probably explain that last statement. Through every fault of my mind, I inadvertently reserved a ticket for the 2D showing of Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft. I didn’t realize it until after it started. Instead of leaving and switching my ticket to the next 3D show, I stayed and watched. It was good, but it was also obvious that I was missing out on a huge part of the experience. It’s clear that it was made to be seen in 3D and only 3D. Would you expect anything less from James Cameron? ANYWAY, I made the decision to return to the cinema the next day and see it as it was meant to be seen. I’m so glad I did. It’s GREAT!

I’ll tell you up front that I don’t know all of Billie Eilish’s songs. I knew three of them going in, two of which are performed in the movie. The rest is all new to me. Having now seen Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft, I can officially say I am a fan. I already was a casual fan of the 24YO singer-songwriter, but now I fully understand her appeal thanks in no small part to Cameron’s amazing kinetic camerawork. The 3D puts you face to face with Billie’s enthusiastic fans with their phones all lit up. You can see the excitement all over their faces. You can feel the strong emotional connection they have with Billie by the way they sing along to the songs they know by heart, many with tears streaming down their faces. They absolutely LOVE her. And she loves them back.

Billie doesn’t just perform for the crowd; she commands the stadium, the Co-op Live arena in Manchester. She first appears sitting atop a huge white floating cube singing “Chihiro” and takes it from there. She leaps, jumps, bounces and struts all over the four-quadrant stage while the cameras track every movement with flawless fluidity, confidence and exuberant joy oozing from every pore. The extra dimension makes her numbers all the more exciting or intimate depending on the song. And Billie is definitely running the show here. Only an artist of her caliber can successfully get a whole stadium to stay quiet while she records the iconic looped harmonies for “When the Party’s Over”. Color me impressed.

When I say Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft is Billie’s show, I mean it in every sense of the word. She also shares directorial duties with Cameron. More than that, the veteran filmmaker defers to her at every turn, allowing her to take the lead. She’s the musical artist; he’s the tech one. He brings her vision to the screen, not his vision of her. He jokes early on that his name will appear in small print below hers in the credits. I’m inclined to believe it looking at the finished product. What an incredible collaboration.

Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft is also part documentary. Every now and then, Cameron leaves the concert to go back in time, to the hours leading up to the big show. The film opens with a time-lapse sequence of the crew setting up for the show, assembling the massive stage and sets. We also get a few heart to hearts with Billie where she talks about being a woman in today’s highly sexualized music industry where young female singers are expected to tramp it up to sell albums. She refuses to buy into it, preferring to dress comfortably in athletic gear. She talks lovingly about older brother Finneas and how he’s with her in spirit even if he’s not there in the flesh (he does make a surprise appearance though). Billie also talks about her injuries (shin splints and sprained ankles) and how she regularly sets up a “puppy room” (with the aid of local pet rescues) to help her and her crew deal with the stress of putting on a show. “Everyone needs some dog love” she says while surrounded by cute pups.

It’s all very interesting, but in the end Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft is about the music. It’s phenomenal. I don’t know the titles of most of the songs, but I found myself bopping along with the more energetic tracks a few times. The 3D doesn’t just add to the experience; it augments it. The camera, like Billie, is all over the place. It’s a big yet simple show. No elaborate sets or backup dancers for her, just a couple of girls (Ava and Jane) singing backup on a few songs, that’s it. And, of course, the band, all of whom we’re introduced to near the end.

I can safely say that Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft (in 3D) has earned a spot on my short list of favorite concert movies with Gimme Shelter (1970), The Last Waltz (1978) and Stop making Sense (1984). It’s a great show in 3D and a good one in 2D. I recommend the former.
