\u00a0Super Troopers 3<\/strong> is a throwback to the days when studios made serious bank on crude R-rated comedies like Animal House (1978), Caddyshack (1980), National Lampoon\u2019s Vacation (1983), Bachelor Party (1984), There\u2019s Something About Mary (1998) and American Pie (1999). Nowadays, they\u2019re more interested in coming up with the next big franchise than making audiences laugh. And the few comedies that do find their way to cinemas simply aren\u2019t funny- e.g. this summer\u2019s Scary Movie reboot. It makes me sad.<\/p>\n

\u00a0I approached Super Troopers 3 <\/strong>the same way I do any three-quel, with cautious optimism. The third time isn\u2019t always the charm when it comes to movie franchises. More oft than not, it\u2019s the beginning of the end for any given series. Look at all the Part 3s that didn\u2019t live up to their predecessors- Superman III (1983), The Karate Kid Part III (1989), The Godfather Part III (1990), Alien 3 (1992), Beverly Hills Cop III (1994), Scream 3 (2000), Terminator 3 (2003), Spider-Man 3 (2007) and so forth. Of course, there are a few exceptions to the rule like Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990). I wasn\u2019t expecting greatness from Super Troopers 3<\/strong>. I just hoped it wouldn\u2019t suck. I would have settled for something along the lines of Police Academy 3 (1986).<\/p>\n

\u00a0Thankfully, the outcome is a positive one. Super Troopers 3<\/strong>, the second sequel to the 2002 cult comedy, is legitimately funny. It\u2019s a no-brainer and I don\u2019t mean that in a negative way. It\u2019s the kind of mindless comedy you can just sit and enjoy without having to look for deeper meaning. It\u2019s about as deep as a puddle of maple syrup on the kitchen floor. It\u2019s loosely plotted and structured leaving room for its stars, the comedy team Broken Lizard, to cut loose and act like adolescents, pranking each other and making dick jokes instead of fighting crime.<\/p>\n

\u00a0So what new threat to public safety is the Vermont State Police up against time? How about a drug ring and a gang of vandals targeting trucks belonging to a despised maple syrup company? What are the chances the two things are connected somehow? Like everything else in Super Troopers 3<\/strong>, that\u2019s a real no-brainer. But it doesn\u2019t really matter because it takes a back seat to something far more important, namely the upcoming nuptials of one of their own.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Farva (Heffernan) is getting married. That\u2019s surprising enough given his boorish, obnoxious personality. Who he\u2019s marrying is an even bigger one. Much to the dismay of group commander Thorny (Chandrasekhar), Farva is marrying his sister Sarita (Simone, New Girl), an academic type who falls in love with him when he saves her life. Naturally, Thorny is against it and wants to put a stop to it. He agrees to be Farva\u2019s best man so he can sabotage the relationship. His plan, of course, involves the bachelor party, a shindig that turns out to be one for the books.<\/p>\n

\u00a0So what\u2019s up with the rest of the gang? Well, let\u2019s see. Foster (Soter) has hit a rough patch in his relationship with Ursula (Coughlan, Freddy Got Fingered), the Chief of Police. They\u2019ve \u201cconsciously uncoupled\u201d and he\u2019s having a hard time with it. Rabbit (Stolhanske) is no longer the rookie of the bunch; that honor now belongs to tech-savvy Coy (Dismukes, SNL), a smart and competent type. After being outrun by a couple of locals in a car chase, Mac (Lemme) becomes obsessed with jumping his patrol car over a creek. The problem is the new electric smart car (voice of Will Sasso) won\u2019t cooperate. Captain O\u2019Hagen (Cox, Manhunter) is officially retired, but keeps showing up at the station much to the annoyance of the new captain, Markowski (Faxon, The Way, Way Back).<\/p>\n

\u00a0I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any point in talking about the usual film review stuff (e.g. acting, writing, cinematography, editing, etc.). Directed by Chandrasekhar, Super Troopers 3<\/strong> is well made and quite funny. The guys, who also wrote the screenplay, look like they\u2019re having fun. Faxon and Dismukes are welcome additions to the cast as are Iqbal Theba (Glee) and Sakina Jaffrey (House of Cards) as the parents of the bride. No surprise, they like their new son-in-law to-be. Simone joins in the fun as she and Farva enjoy an active and completely non-discreet sex life.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Really, the only thing that truly matters about Super Troopers 3<\/strong> is that it\u2019s funny. Most of the jokes land which is a blessing in and of itself. The Broken Lizard guys have a feel for what works and what doesn\u2019t. I laughed a lot. The humor is crude, offensive (in the way a Mel Brooks comedy is) and always stupid yet never mean-spirited. I don\u2019t want to spoil any of the gags, but there\u2019s one that directly references The Empire Strikes Back that had me cracking up.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Okay, I\u2019ll drop one more spoiler. There\u2019s a bonus mid-credits scene that ends with the promise of a fourth Super Troopers. I truly hope it doesn\u2019t go the way of Doctor Detroit II: The Wrath of Mom. In any event, I enjoyed Super Troopers 3<\/strong>. It\u2019s a sure cure for the August doldrums. Just be sure to shut off your brain along with your iPhone.\"\"<\/p>\n
