He’s going to play an ex-something living the quiet life until he’s forced back into action for one or more of three reasons: (1) to help a friend, (2) to clear his name of some wrongdoing or (3) revenge. Lots of violence will ensue and he’ll rack up a sizable body count before he’s done. Some call it redundant. I say why fix it if still works?

In the case of his latest actioner Mutiny, his motive is a combo of 2 and 3. Cole Reed (that’s Statham), an ex-London cop now working as a private bodyguard for a wealthy Bangkok businessman (Tikaram, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love), finds himself falsely accused of murder after his boss is killed in an ambush. This, of course, puts Cole right on the vengeance trail. He needs to (1) clear his name and (2) find out who’s responsible for his friend’s murder.

Cole conveniently finds a clue at the scene that leads him to a container ship. He boards with no problem and soon uncovers a human trafficking operation. Now he’s even more pissed off. He’s discovered and the slimy captain (Moller, Atomic Blonde) orders his crew to hunt down the stowaway and deal with him. Yeah, like that ever works.

Luckily, Cole isn’t all alone in his crusade. He gets help from third mate Angie Ellis (Wallis, Malignant), a last-minute replacement for somebody who called out sick. A single mother trying to get home to L.A. to see her young daughter, she helps Cole after realizing her colleagues on the ship are all dirty. She manages to contact a Navy vessel and ask the commander (Lester, Primary Colors) for help. He heads to their location, but will he make it before the bad guys can rendezvous with worse guys?

How am I supposed to “review” a movie like Mutiny? I can’t. The traditional rules don’t apply. It’s not made for critics. It’s not meant to be analyzed. It’s not a statement on the human condition. It’s a Jason Statham movie. That one sentence tells you everything you need to know much like “it’s a Chuck Norris movie” in the 80s and “it’s a Steven Seagal movie” in the 90s. You either like Statham or you don’t. I like him; therefore, I like his movies. It’s really that simple.

Directed by Jean-Francois Richet (Plane), Mutiny adheres to formula throughout. There are no surprises or deviations from what usually happens in these things. The screenplay by J.P. Davis (Plane) and Lindsay Michel is one of those by-the-numbers deals. Cole infiltrates the enemy on their own turf and starts picking them off. He makes his way around the ship, ducking and hiding and shooting and clobbering with whatever’s handy. At one point, he crawls through an air vent to get from point A to point B without being seen. I kind of expected him to bump into Bruce Willis. We also get the usual tough guy dialogue including one priceless line from the Navy captain who quips after seeing fake news about Cole, “A cop-killing fugitive. Just what this s*** show needs.” There’s not of originality here, but Richet keeps things moving along so it’s not that big a deal.

The action scenes are serviceable. Richet doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, but he does provide a few solid “Oooh!” and “OUCH!” moments. In one memorable bit, Cole uses an open padlock to rip an opponent’s cheek open. Yeah, that’s a great big “OUCH!” We also get deaths by axe, broken glass and harpoon gun. That’s on top of Statham beating the s*** out of members of the ship’s motley crew. There is NO shortage of action in Mutiny. That’s the most important thing I would imagine.

The acting is exactly what you’d expect in a silly B-movie. Statham plays Statham in a no-frills performance. Wallis is there for the estrogen boost. Moller is suitably scuzzy. And as the yuppie creep behind everything that happens, Simon Kluth will not go down in cinematic history as a memorable villain. He’s right out of the Bad Guy 101 textbook.

I enjoyed Mutiny very much. It’s a solid action movie. I saw it with my brother which brought on a sense of nostalgia as it reminded me of my misspent youth when I’d see all the actioners with my dad. He probably would have liked Mutiny. It’s what he would call a matinee movie. It’s ideal for Saturday afternoon viewing at a bargain price.

Mutiny (2026) Lionsgate/Action RT: 95 minutes Rated R (strong bloody violence and language) Director: Jean-Francois Richet Screenplay: Lindsay Michel and J.P.
