\u00a0What do Mark Wahlberg, Channing Tatum, Kate Mara and Brad Pitt all have in common? They\u2019ve all been in dog movies; Arthur the King, Dog, Meagan Leavey and Heart of the Beast<\/strong> respectively. Furthermore, three of the four deal with military dogs (NOT Arthur) suffering from the physical and psychological effects of being in active combat. It\u2019s a subject that doesn\u2019t get discussed enough. Dogs deserve just as much credit and respect for their service to this country than their human counterparts. I\u2019m always glad to see a film that tells their tails…. I mean, tales.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) stars as James Belmont, a retired Special Forces officer (30 years service!) who finds himself stranded in Alaskan wilderness after his seaplane goes down. By his side is his faithful canine companion, a German Shepherd named Odin, with whom he served with in Iraq and Afghanistan. Odin, otherwise a fine dog, suffers from PTSD in the form of nightmares. His human will sit up with him, comforting him and reminding him that those days are over. It\u2019s a beautiful friendship.<\/p>\n

\u00a0ANYWAY, the plane goes down because James suffers a mid-air heart attack. Now he and Odin are at the mercy of cruel nature and its elements. With no way to call for help, they must rely on themselves and each other to make the 58-mile walk back to civilization. It\u2019s a trek fraught with dangers (wild animals, raging waters, slippery rocks, a swamp where a field was supposed to be), but at least they have each other.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Okay, now for the part all you dog lovers have been waiting for. Does the dog die? SPOILER ALERT!<\/strong> This is your last chance to skip to the next paragraph if you don\u2019t want to know. Okay, then. I\u2019m happy to report Odin does NOT die. He makes it to the end. Are you as relieved as I was? Speaking of the dog, I really wish the Academy would add a Best Performance by a Canine Actor to its roster. Uber, the name of the dog playing Odin, deserves to be recognized for his work here. He convincingly portrays a dog who stays loyal to his human while fighting personal demons (along with a pack of wolves in one scene). It should also be mentioned that the real Uber does NOT have a prosthetic leg like Odin. The illusion is accomplished through digital effects and positioning.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Directed by David Ayer (The Beekeeper), Heart of the Beast<\/strong> is a gripping film that deftly balances rough survival action and heartfelt drama. It tells a beautiful story that examines the connection between a man and his dog while putting them in peril at almost every turn. Pitt\u2019s character, while an Army vet who\u2019s seen his fair share of action, isn\u2019t the kind of hero who performs acts of derring-do rarely seen outside an Indiana Jones adventure. He\u2019s a man who knows how to survive rather than an indestructible super-human. In the role, Brad isn\u2019t half bad. Given his inherent charm, it\u2019s hard to accept him as a lone wolf sort who wants to be left alone. Yet he manages to pull it off. This is why he\u2019s a star.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Heart of the Beast<\/strong> is essentially a one-man and one-dog show save for brief appearances by J.K. Simmons (The Accountant 1 & 2) as a friendly stranger and Anna Lambe (The Grizzlies) as a young woman who….. well, I won\u2019t say. They both do a good job, especially Simmons. His scene with Pitt exists mainly to provide a bit of exposition about how he and Odin got there. In the hands of less capable directors, it would come off as obvious and clumsy. Ayer weaves it into the narrative in such a way that it feels natural and unobtrusive.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Ayer keeps things moving at a nice clip while keeping the tension tight. It\u2019s a white-knuckle journey made tougher by James\u2019 heart issues. You keep wondering how long he can go before his heart finally gives out. Ayer doesn\u2019t let Heart of the Beast<\/strong> get weighed down by deep issues. He doesn\u2019t even dwell on the whole PTSD thing. It\u2019s very much part of the story, but it\u2019s not the entire thing. The emphasis is on the survival aspect of it.<\/p>\n

\u00a0I\u2019m not out to spoil Heart of the Beast<\/strong>, but I expect many will develop a lump in their throat at one or two points. Thankfully, it never comes off as overly sentimental. It\u2019s just the right amount of drama. In the end, it\u2019s a satisfying film.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n
