It lacks the slick visual style David Fincher brought to the 2010 film, but makes up for it with a compelling true story about the cyber-malfeasance going on at Facebook. It’s aided greatly by solid acting all around, especially from the three leads.

Aaron Sorkin, the writer of The Social Network, steps in for Fincher as director. He previously helmed Molly’s Game (2017) and The Trail of the Chicago 7 (2020). He continues writing duties here, penning a script filled with sharp dialogue delivered with rapid-fire precision. It’s kind of fun watching the interaction between Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White, a verbal sword fight resembling the one between Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday (1940). It’s like a rom-com without the rom.

Based on true events, The Social Reckoning opens with a sequence of a young woman filming an increasingly hostile encounter with the police. She deliberately provokes them with aggressive behavior and racial slurs before they finally arrest her. She posts it on a right-wing extremist page. That’s where Frances Haugen comes into the picture.

Haugen (Madison in her first role since winning the Oscar for Anora) works for Facebook as a data engineer in the Civic Integrity department. She’s concerned for her friend, the woman in the viral video. She wants to know who radicalized the former Progressive. Turns out it’s the company she works for. It’s part of a much larger issue; namely, the amount of right-wing propaganda that shows up on Facebook. When Frances tries to bring it up at work, her bosses and co-workers consistently shut her down. She needs to take it somewhere else. That’s where Jeff Horwitz comes into the picture.

Horwitz (Allen, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere) is a political reporter who goes to work for the Wall Street Journal as a tech reporter, a subject he admits to knowing nothing about. He wants do an expose on Facebook, but can’t find anybody willing to talk to him. That is, until Frances responds to his message. She initially doesn’t want to get too involved, just pointing him in the right direction before walking away. She, of course, changes her mind and ends up giving him documents that became publicly known as “The Facebook Files”.

Sorkin jumps back and forth between timelines showing how past events shaped what came later. He goes from the Frances-Horwitz story to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Strong, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere) being prepped to testify before Congress. The method actor portrays Zuck as an arrogant, difficult and caustic figure without a single shred of humanity. He’s like a replicant from Blade Runner. He spends most of the movie being advised by a crisis management specialist (Mosaku, Deadpool & Wolverine) and a former investor (Burr, F Is for Family) on how to answer questions in a way that makes him look more human. Naturally, Mark fights them every step of the way. That’s the kind of person he is apparently.

The Social Reckoning is not as visually exciting as Social Network, but it has a tense undercurrent flowing throughout. The score by Alexandre Desplat isn’t as riveting as the one by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, but it works. What this one does have is a tight, intelligent screenplay that tries to explain all the tech stuff and three amazing lead performances.

Mikey plays Frances as an intelligent woman struggling with severe social anxiety. She flounders on a date she set up on an app. She’s a true believer in Facebook’s original mission to connect people. This idealism is destroyed by the realization of what her employer is really up to. She sets out to make it better only to have to become a whistleblower when ignored. She’s positively brilliant in the role.

White is great as Horwitz, a reporter who hates the idea of tech replacing print journalism as the go-to news source. He’s a smart guy who meets his match with Frances. Their verbal back and forth is one of the movie’s highlights. Their dialogue is pointed and sometimes humorous. One might even think they’re getting ready to hook up. In any event, White nails the role.

Strong, replacing Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg, plays the role almost like a cartoon villain. Zuck sits in his lair, complete with bulletproof couch, and commands his people who quake in their shoes being in his presence. Not once does his face show any sign of humanity or decency. Also, if there was every any doubt this guy is on the spectrum, this answers it with complete certainty.

It has its flaws, but they’re few. Overall, The Social Reckoning is a pretty good BOATS thriller that connects Facebook to a real-life event that occurred in our nation’s capital in early 2021. I think you know what I’m referring to. It’s scary to think the social media platform weaponized right-wing sentiment to that level. In that way, The Social Reckoning is a horror movie about the dangers of social media going unchecked. Makes you think twice about letting your kids set up an account.

The Social Reckoning (2026) Columbia/Drama-Thriller RT: 112 minutes Rated R (language) Director: Aaron Sorkin Screenplay: Aaron Sorkin Music: Alexandre Desplat Cinematography: Jeff Cronenweth Release date: October 9, 2026 (US) Cast: Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong, Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Billy Magnussen, Betty Gilpin, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Anna Lambe, Aidan Laprete, Kelley Pereira, Nelson Franklin, […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[41

post-15140","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-now-playing
https://i0.wp.com/movieguy247.com/MovieGuy/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/The-Social-Reckoning-POSTER.jpg?fit=620%2C930&ssl=1
["GET
