When a film approaches its historical material with absolute, unironic conviction, you want to lean in and reward the ambition. You want to root for filmmakers who still believe that cinema can be a grand, unapologetic vessel for moral struggle, spiritual endurance, and sweeping emotional stakes. But when that ambition gets weighed down by formulaic story beats and pop-infused musical numbers, even the most sympathetic viewer ends up checking their watch as the third act approaches.

Angel Studios’ Drummer Boy, directed by the brother duo Ben and Joel David Smallbone, lands squarely in that middle realm. It is not a cynical corporate cash-in, nor is it a complete creative misfire. It is a deeply earnest, visually polished labor of love that works hard to earn your tears- even if you can see every single dramatic gear turning miles before it hits the screen.

Set during the turbulent opening years of the American Revolution, the film attempts to weave historical warfare with intimate family tragedy. It centers on the Clem family, whose domestic peace is shattered when political divides rip through their community. Jeremiah (played by co-director Joel David Smallbone), a young man driven by an unshakable drumbeat of faith and freedom, takes up a musket and marches off to join the loyalist effort. His younger brother Benjamin (Leach), left lame after a childhood accident, finds himself drawn toward the opposing cause, setting up a classic brother-against-brother conflict. Intertwined with their ideological split is Emmaline (India Brown), an enslaved woman fighting for her own immediate liberty, whose connection to the brothers tests their personal loyalties and moral clarity at every turn.

The film’s biggest selling point- and simultaneously its most awkward point of friction- is its sound design and musical framing. Rather than relying on traditional orchestral scoring or Broadway-style narrative numbers, the directors opt for a driving, modern folk-pop soundtrack built around heavy rhythmic percussion. When a battle sequence aligns with a thunderous drumline, the camera tracking through gunpowder smoke in time with the beat, the film achieves a genuine, kinetic visual energy. You feel the pulse of the snare in your chest.

Yet when the kinetic energy stops for quiet character beats, the music often backfires. When the film pauses for grand lyrical declarations of duty, fear, and divine hope, the contemporary songwriting style threatens to pull you right out of the 18th century. The lyrics rely heavily on familiar inspirational tropes, flattening complex historical trauma into easily digestible anthems.

What holds the picture together through its narrative lulls is the total commitment of its veteran supporting cast. Melora Hardin (The Office) delivers an agonizing, standout performance as the brothers’ mother, bringing raw emotional truth to a role that could easily have felt like a stock historical archetype. When she prays for her sons’ survival, her face carved with grief and resilience, the film finds its true human anchor. Meanwhile, Iain Glen (Games of Thrones) and Charles Esten (Nashville) bring welcome authority and gravitas to their respective roles as military commanders, grounding the high-register melodrama in solid, believable dramatic craft.

Visually, the Smallbone brothers know how to capture scope. The cinematography captures the golden hues of colonial landscapes and the harsh, brutal realities of winter encampments with a rich, painterly quality. The production design feels tactile- from the fraying wool of the uniforms to the splintered wood of the military snare drums.

Drummer Boy never lacks sincerity. Its earnest exploration of forgiveness, faith, and political reconciliation gives it a beating heart that many cynical, hollow big-budget spectacles lack entirely. But its insistence on predictable plot twists and its reliance on modern pop-musical aesthetics keep it from hitting a truly transcendent cadence. It is a solid, well-crafted night at the movies that delivers enough emotional punch to satisfy its core audience, even as its formulaic edges hold it back from true greatness.

Drummer Boy (2026) Angel/Musical-Drama RT: 129 minutes Rated PG-13 (war violence, some bloody images) Director: Ben and Joel David Smallbone Screenplay: Richard L.
